Anybody remember Shawn Bates? Mostly whenever I bring up that name when I am talking with my friends, there are a lot of curse words involved in the sophisticated conversation. It seems like he could get hurt doing basically anything. "Hey Shawn can you hold this grocery bag for this old woman?" "Sure I can" back tightens up and misses the rest of the season. Despite everyones problems with Bates he is like an iconic Islander figure to me. The memory that stands out the most of Bates is the penalty shot against the Maple Leafs in the playoffs. How sweet was that? I don't dwell on his injuries because he is not really a spectacular player. Anyone could fill in and do exactly what he does, but I think Islander fans admired how he put his heart and soul into the game. I believe this is exactly why people get frustrated when he is constantly hurt. So for all your Shawn Bates memories keep the happy thoughts in mind and forget about the injuries. Rock on Batesy maybe you can come back and play more than 5 games without getting hurt one day I really would love to see it.
